The main strain of birds raced over the years are the Karel Hermans which were obtained direct from Karel in Belgium prior to his death in 1975. This family has won at all levels of competition, not only for Mark and Dick, but also fanciers world-wide. They receive letters and phone calls of fed winners week in and week out.

On 22nd May 1999, the same day as the Northern Classic was flown, Mark and Dick had some outstanding reports from fanciers who has purchased pigeons from them. In fact, three different Feds were topped and a third Fed, all by different fanciers. These reports gave Mark and Dick great pleasure. Another outstanding performance on the same day came from their good friend Roy Roberts, who took 2nd & 5th in the South West Essex Amal (5103 birds competing), with two 2 year old Herman cocks, which have scored consistently from being youngsters.

Over the years, Roy has had outstanding performances with Hermans purchased from M & D Evans. Roy only has approximately 15 w/h cocks, but he is certainly a force to be reckoned with.
These performances reported on the 22nd May don’t beat the previous records held by Myrtle Lofts. One Saturday alone, five different fanciers from different areas won 1st Feds with Hermans purchased from Myrtle Lofts, Mark and Dick’s young bird team in 2002, contained youngsters eight generations from the original direct stock and are still continuing to win at all levels of competition. This proves what excellent stock men Mark and Dick have proved to be.

Also housed are the outstanding middle-distance family the Vandenabeeles, Mark and Dick purchased 54 bred direct by Gaby Vandeneabeele, bred between 1985 – 1995 all bred from Gabys best stock. These include sons and daughter and brothers and sisters from the following pigeons Kleinen, Wittenbuik, Schone Fideel, Rambo, Turbo, Play Boy, Pijl, Zoon Nationaal, De Klaren, Crayonne, Ronker, Brive, Amocachi, the list goes on. As soon as this new family were introduced from the beginning Mark and Dick knew they had the task to select the best. Believe me as outstanding as Gaby Vandenabeele is as a top stock man breeding outstanding pigeons world wide, it would be totally impossible for him to breed Myrtle Lofts 54 champion breeders.

In 1998 not surprisingly 12 pigeons were destroyed as they did not make the standard for Mark and Dick’s stock lofts, but they were pleased to say the remaining 42 are responsible for breeding outright 1st prize winners in Club, Fed., Amal., Classic and National races beating up to and over 30000 birds.

Mark and Dick’s next stage was to re-assess the remaining 42 because they believe their breeding standards are higher than most. All their stock birds must be capable of breeding pigeons with the ability to win Classic and National races. From the year 2001 onwards their stock lofts contain only 22 from the start of the 54 direct Vandenabeele’s. This lengthy elimination process has left them 22 Vandenabeele’s which are the cream of this family. In my mind Myrtle lofts will carry on winning at this level as each year they are continuing adding fresh Vandenabeele stock to their team, a prime example the year 2000, two 1st National and a Classic winner plus many more performance pigeons have been added to the breeding lofts. Plus two of their top racing birds were sent to stock in Belgium in the year 2000 to be paired to two Vandenabeele birds again this is to try and increase the quality to both racing and breeding teams.

The bloodlines of the Koen Minderhoud family came to Myrtle Lofts in the year 2000 when Mark and Dick were looking world wide seeking to purchase some more top Vandenabeele pigeons to cross into their own family. Mark and Dick’s opinion is the best of the direct Vandenabeeles were bred between 1985 and 1995, so Mark made inquires at 28 different lofts around Europe who he knew had required pigeons direct from Gaby between that periods. After studying results and information received by post or by fax Mark and Dick made plans to visit 16 lofts in Belgium, Germany and Holland. This venture cost over ￡3500 in traveling and lodging expenses, an amount Mark and Dick were prepared to pay to ensure they obtained the best.

On Mark and Dicks travels they admit they met some top class fanciers and handled many outstanding performance pigeons, but from them all Koen Minderhoud from the Netherlands had without doubt the best Vandenabeele stock Mark and Dick had seen in all the 16 loft visits. Dick quoted Koen Minderhoud to him is as honest and as genuine as they come and is pleased Mark and himself can work together with Koen to ensure they keep the very best of the Vandenabeele lines.

I myself have studied the stock at Mark and Dick’s loft and also the stock at Koen Minderhoud’s and I can honestly say these two lofts between them, without doubt own the best Gaby Vandenabeele birds in the world and by working together can only improve perfection.

Mark and Dick’s family have always made me welcome on the many visits to their home in North Yorkshire and they speak very openly about there passion for pigeon racing and discuss in deep detail their long term plans for the future. Mark and Dick both work together extremely hard at all aspects of the sport and neither one will make any decision without consulting the other, but Mark is in main control of the breeding lofts. It is his ambition to continue breeding the many champions that Myrtle Lofts have already produced for themselves and other fanciers world-wide.

His technique in breeding is down to perfection. Mark requires all their stock birds to be able to breed winners to several different mates and at least breed one winner in every nest. He will only breed from the very best bloodlines and performance pigeons. He will out breed, then as not to lose the best of the family he will then go back to inbreeding and line breeding. Mark admits there is a fine line in inbreeding and out breeding to ensure you are still breeding the same quality of champions twenty years down the line.

Dick is in main control of the racing lofts, and it is his job to put to test Mark’s work, which he does thoroughly. It has always been Dick’s theory that it is far better to have ten or twelve yearlings which have been well educated than thirty with no education. He doesn’t believe in putting young cocks away for later that have only had three or four races. All young birds have to fly the full race programme and provided the forecast looks O.K. all young birds are sent over the channel with the Midlands National or the Northern Classic.

For Example in the year 2000 at the end of the season Mark and Dick had 45 youngsters left, each and everyone was entered in the Midlands National from Picauville. The birds were liberated on a clear fresh morning which looked ideal for racing, except for the last twenty to thirty miles where there was a fog bank. Unfortunately it never cleared all day which virtually made it impossible for the back markers to get among the prize winners. Never the less at 5.30pm on the day of liberation from Picauville approx. 300 miles Mark and Dick had 38 young birds in the loft from and entry of 45 and by the hours of darkness they had the safe return of 42 and another on next morning.

Mark and Dick were more than satisfied under the conditions. In 2001 owing to the foot and mouth the young bird National was held from Guernsey again approx. 300 miles but a slightly harder race point as the birds immediately encounter 100 miles of sea across the English channel. The forecast was anything but favorable and it was obvious, a holdover was predicted. So Mark and Dick decided to play safe and kept the 28 young cocks at home and entered all the young hens.

Going back in this article you will see the outstanding result the partnership achieved. As a matter of interest Mark and Dick started the year 2001 young bird season with 73 young birds this is a larger team than normal for the two of them, but they had some new stock from Koen Minderhoud which had to be tried and tested. At the end of the season they finished up with 59 of the young birds left and 48 different young birds had won prize cards. This can only be described as an outstanding achievement for both partners. With the performances the partnership have achieved for a period of over 30 years, both of them can only be described as true professionals.

In the racing loft credit where credit is due, you could have the best pigeons in the world but without good management you will not win anything. I have asked Mark and Dick about their methods of training and feeding. The widowhood cocks are mated at Christmas, a couple of weeks after the stock birds. The racers road trained between 35 and 50 miles three times a week, and are given plenty of food for the hard work expected of them. Dick’s reply was at no time are any birds rationed, either the widowhood team of 32 cocks or the young bird team they all get as much food as they want.

Dick’s programme in feeding, health, fitness, and training and on top of all that motivation with young birds and old birds is second to none. To me Dick can only be described as a absolute genius. Both Mark and Dick show the true aspects in what it takes to produce and educate their birds, by both of them working together sharing their ambition, sheer hard work and dedication, their wise knowledge of the racing pigeon and the racing game. This has made Myrtle Lofts on many occasions winners of that red card, week-in and week-out, and has consistently done so for the last 30 years in Club, Fed, Amal, Classic and National racing.

Going back to 1996 I asked Mark and Dick how they would describe their outstanding success in a couple of sentences, they quoted “in the 1970s we bought the best, in the 1980s and 1990s we continued to buy and breed the best, and towards the year 2000 we are convinced the best is yet to come.” A statement they have proved to be correct.

They have purchased the best and the results have proved it. To me what the results show is a continuity of top class birds coming through year after year, not one or two producing pairs but many, many ace breeders. This means that the average quality is higher than most, giving them a greater chance of success in both racing and breeding.

They have only a small race team, but where they have a big advantage is the youngsters they breed are top class and Mark and Dick as I stated earlier have excellent knowledge to educate them to the highest level and as old birds they work to find every birds individual needs to make them 100% fit on the race day. This is why this father and son partnership are winning National and Classic races with just a hand full of birds.

Mark and Dick are very open about their breeding and racing methods. They both agree to win in today’s competition in pigeon racing you must start with the basic rules. Only breed off top class stock, feed only the best corns available, don’t expect youngsters to go racing without a very good education and a lot of hard work continuing to educate your birds all their racing lives.

Mark and Dick both admit there are no secrets to success, a lot comes down to common sense. Mark receives weekly pigeon magazines from Germany, Holland and Belgium so he can keep a close eye on who and what pigeons are constantly ahead in National racing. They then travel the world and purchase the best pigeons money can buy. They do feed Versele-laga (Best all Round) up to six weeks before racing starts which then the race birds are fed on Mark and Dick’s own mix made up from corns and seeds bought separately again from Versele-Laga. On top of this they do believe by using several medications and tonics from Rohnfried in Germany they can keep their birds 100% fit and healthy all year round.

Mark and Dick’s performances are already some of the best achieved in the history of British pigeon racing, but I myself after studying their plans for the next few years, working and breeding along side some of the best fanciers in the world. I am convinced the best is yet to come.
