I first introduced the Gaby Vandenabeele family to my loft in 1996 with only four birds purchased from the outstanding racing and breeding lofts of M & D. Evans, Myrtle Lofts, Whitley Bridge. After breeding from these two pairs they proved to me the true potential of this outstanding family, breeding winner after winner in their first year at stock. The last seven years I have continued to add more of the M & D. Evans Vandenabeeles to my lofts which contains the winning blood from all their best lines including direct sons and daughters from "Jester", "Carrie", "Benetton", "Belle", "Blauwen Lagune", "Crystal", "Nationaal Fideel", "Chloe" ete. plus the new Vandenabeele blood bred by Mark & Dick from stock they obtained from their very good friend Koen Minderhoud. These stock birds have bred

for me outright 1st Prize winners in Club, Federation, & Amal races 4,000 + birds competing. This family have won for me from 70 miles right through to 500 miles, they have the ability to win on fast days or slow days what ever the weather. I have compared this family against other pigeons that I have introduced from other top racing lofts but believe me the pigeons from M & D. Evans are in a league above the rest.

One pair of pigeons you bred for my stock loft, a grandson of Joshua when paired to a grand daughter of Jester & Carrie have already bred three different young birds to win first prizes. I have enclosed all results showing were your birds have won including topping the Federation you will see on different occasions there has been over 3000+ birds competing in the federation races. I can only say that they are excellent pigeons from two first-class and very genuine pigeon fanciers.

The birds which have achieved these outstanding performances have been over 95% Mark & Dick’s bloodlines. In the time I have raced these birds I must admit I have purchased pigeons from other racing and breeding studs on the lookout for special pigeons to add to my team, but believe me the bloodlines from Myrtle Lofts have made these new strains look daft. I will go to say Mark & Dick’s pigeons are without doubt in a league above the rest.

Anyone who knows racing pigeons will be well acquainted with the phenomenal racing successes Mark & Dick Evans have had with their Herman and Vandenabeele pigeons. When I decided I wanted to compete with the best I knew I had to buy some better birds. Research told me there were several good fanciers who I could possibly buy birds off. But looking behind the headlines, one name kept cropping up for not only winning races, but for also breeding champion pigeons for others. For however good you think Mark & Dick are at racing pigeons, their ability as stockmen far outshines any of their racing successes. If you want a short cut to the top, look no further. In 2003 was my first full season racing Mark & Dick’s pigeons. With only 6 Vandenabeele widowhood cocks, this small team made me the highest old bird points winner in the Vale of York Federation.

My brother and I have had a long and successful association with racing pigeons, flying successfully at Club, Fed and the Up North Combine level. However to stay at the top becomes harder each year requiring hard work and total dedication to your birds.

We believe having the right birds to work with is paramount to any lasting success and are constantly on the lookout for birds that will enhance our team. Our search for those extra special birds have seen us visit and purchase from many of this country’s household names, some of whom made and still make outrageous claims for their birds. Sadly over the years these imports have failed to measure up to our own team where it matters, racing performance! However in 2001 we contacted Mark and Dick Evans having followed their outstanding success in the M.N.F.C. for some time, with the view to seeing their Vandenabeele’s. I’ve got to say we took to Mark and Dick immediately they are two of the most genuine and modest men you are ever likely to meet. There was no hard sell at these lofts, hardly surprising really because the birds sell themselves. We have never handled so many outstanding stock birds at one loft, we were handed bird after bird all of one type and oozing class. Despite Dick’s advice not to order anything straightaway, we couldn’t leave without putting in an order for latebreds. By the time we had driven up the motorway we were back on the phone increasing the order of latebreds plus some old enough to race for 2002. So the 2002 young bird season came and we at last had the chance to try the M & D. Evans stock against our own.

There were many other positions won by Mark and Dick’s birds making them without doubt the best birds we have ever introduced to our lofts, and the first to surpass our own birds performances. I hope this letter finds you well, I’m sure the performances of your own birds must be giving you great deal of satisfaction. However I am a bit concerned about the number of cars you are winning, will we have to park in the next village the next time we come down or have you got planning permission for a multi-storey car park? I’ve finally got round to putting down on paper the results I promised, your birds have helped us to win the Club and Federation Inland Averages with three races to spare this season. If you compare the results enclosed in this letter with the other results I sent at the end of the 2002 Y.B. season you will see that "Thank H Evans" cock and 3020, 3059 and 3058 in particular are developing into more than useful birds. Your bird’s results have on analysis outstripped our own yearlings performances. The races which have dropped to around 1400’s velocities then your birds are getting out in front. To date we have won 9 x 1st Clubs and 5 x 1st Federations and we are waiting to hear about yesterdays race when we were 1st or 2nd Federation. The 2000 young bird season was our first attempt at racing pigeons that we’d purchased from M & D. Evans. It’s fair to say, that the offspring of the original 3 pigeons that we bought have exceeded our expectations by far. All of the youngsters raced the programme fully without us losing any of them. They showed maturity and intelligence beyond their tender age. Performance-wise we were delighted with them too. At club level they won many prizes, with one in particular hen winning 3x2nd 1x3rd. Our timer in the Midland National, Picauville race that finished 7th Open National 6,465 birds is also 100% Myrtle Lofts Vandenabeele. We also won 1st Open Stafford Gold Ring from Guernsey by over 30 minutes winning ￡1,700 plus. We’re so pleased with them that we’ve been back and invested further. We wouldn’t do that unless we were more than happy with both the birds that are housed and the character of Mark and Dick Evans.

The first time that I met Mark and Dick Evans was the morning after their sensational 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 9th and 14th Open in the MNFC Picauville race in 1998 against over 4000 birds. It was a truly remarkable performance on a very fair racing day. No advantages were on offer to the partnership on that day – other

than having superb pigeons, well-motivated, in optimum health and in magnificent form! As the Press Officer for that organisation at the time in question it was a privilege to see the birds that had put up this sensational performance. It soon dawned upon me that there was an outstanding array of pigeons at the lofts, and more importantly they were being cared for by two thoroughly down to earth and honest pigeon men in Dick and his son Mark. My father and I were so impressed with what we saw that we readily came to the conclusion that we needed to introduce these pigeons. That was five years ago and it was a decision that we have never regretted for a moment. The Gaby Vandenabeeles and more recently the Koen Minderhoud birds are the only introductions that have ever truly came in and made an immediate impression against our own pigeons that had been successful in topping the Federation against almost 10,000 birds. Initially some 1999 youngsters were introduced that were put straight to Stock. These form the hard-core foundation of our present day Vandenabeele family. Since then more pigeons have been successfully introduced. Direct children of "Jester", "Carrie", "Golden Boy", "Blauwen Nationaal", "Benetton", "Saffron", "Shadow", "Nationaal Girl" plus brothers and sisters to the infamous "Rolls Royce" have all proved great assets to us. More recently the Koen Minderhoud birds are proving equally as valuable with pigeons from these winning 1st Federation against over 5000 birds for us on more than one occasion in 2003. That shows us that they must be real quality to get to the very front against such a large number of competing pigeons. The birds that are housed by Mark and Dick are of absolutely sublime quality. I’ve never heard of anyone who has seen them that hasn’t been impressed with them. Mind you, when you consider the fact that only the absolute cream are entertained by the Evans’s then you can perhaps see why. Second best is neither sought nor entertained. Reputations are worth nothing – if the birds don’t produce then they have no future at Myrtle Lofts. It is this pursuit of excellence that has led them to being phenomenally successful both in their own right and in breeding winners for other people too. National winners of M & D Evans bloodlines are being reported with almost frightening regularity. Mark and Dick Evans are rightly operating at the very highest level of the Sport in the UK. The effort that has gone into making them the force that they are must be frightening and the birds are a compliment to them. If you’re looking for a family of birds that can win and win against any kind of competition then these are an outlet that you need to investigate. Victories at Open level in the NFC and MNFC have already fallen to their birds as well as major honors in the massive NIPA and UNC to name but two other organisations. Get these birds right and they’ll turn it on almost irrespective of the mileage and speed involved – they really are that versatile. Add this to the fact that you’ll not meet two more honest and genuine men than Mark and Dick and you have a formidable cocktail waiting to explode! I’m proud to be able to call them my friends. I race 16 widowhood cocks and a total of 30 young birds maximum. All young birds have to fly the full federation programme. I have been highest prize winner in my club Baldock R.P.C. the past four years and the birds from M & D. Evans have helped me achieve this. I was 2nd Section H, 36th Open N.F.C Guernsey 7,190 birds and 40th Open London & South East Classic 2,145 birds also from Guernsey. Both these young birds must have been at a disadvantage due to my work shift pattern, all the youngsters are raced naturally, no darkness system here.

I spent a large amount of money on trying to build a family of pigeons to take myself to the top to which I had little success with the birds I had bought. Until I was advised to visit the lofts of Mark & Dick of Whitley Bridge. My first opinion of the birds they housed at Myrtle Lofts were outstanding which explained why there where so many different fanciers winning with them from around the U.K. Mark & Dick advised me on the birds I would require to start a family of their Herman and Vandenabeele bloodlines, which cost a fraction of the money I had already spent on pigeons in

the past. In my first full year racing Mark & Dick’s pigeons I was highest prize winner in Beverley & District winning 18 x 1st prizes plus The King of Beverley Trophy, Combine Points, All Old Bird Aves, Best Performance Old Bird, Longest Old Bird, Young Bird Aves, All Channel Aves the list goes on, a total of 26 Trophies in all. This proved to me it wasn’t my management at fault in the other families of pigeons I had bought, it was the pigeons purchased prior were not good enough to beat the competition in my area. It also proved to me the advise, I had been given telling me some of the best pigeon in the U.K. were housed at Myrtle Lofts was the most honest truth I have ever received. Credit to both Mark & Dick they have spent a live time building an outstanding family of top class pigeons which not only has taken them to the top but they have also shared their bloodlines to put fanciers like myself in the same position.

After finding out M & D. Evans were fully booked up for young birds, we placed an order for Gaby Vandenabeele and Karel Herman young birds, these was to be late bred’s for future stock. After many months of waiting, I made the long journey to pick them up. I found Mark & Dick Evans two very genuine fanciers, totally dedicated, very honest and straight forwards. In my view they both deserve all their successes for what they have given to the sport. We raced a couple of pairs from their bloodlines this season and straight away they scored in the local club and the Mid Kent Federation, they also scored in the London and South East Classic Club. Others we gave a couple of races and then put them to one side for next year 2001 "our losses" from M & D. Evans stock was nil. They have top class birds with years of winning in their origin.

For several seasons I have constantly admired the outstanding performance achieved by the top racing and breeding lofts of Mark & Dick Evans, their race results have been described as among the best achieved in British pigeon racing. A statement I must agree, their birds have without doubt put up some of the best performance by far, not just with one bird but with a complete team. Prime example was in 2001 the Midlands National from Guernsey racing into a head wind Mark and Dick winning 1st, 5th, 7th, 10th, 15th, 21st, 31st, 38th, 39th Section, 2nd 8th, 10th, 13th, 23rd, 35th, 49th, 63rd, 65th Open and their partnership loft G. S. Daykin, Son & Evans winning 2nd, 4th, 6th, 16th, 24th, 25th, 37th, 46th, 51st Section, 4th, 7th, 9th, 28th, 38th, 39th, 61st, 77th, 86th Open. Between them both results combined winning 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th, 15th, 16th, 21st, 24th, 25th, 31st, 37th, 38th, 39th, 46th, 51st North East Section, 269 members sent 2,069 birds. Winning 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 13th, 23rd, 28th, 35th, 38th, 39th, 49th, 61st, 63rd, 65th, 77th, 86th Open National 771 members sent 5,661 birds. The two lofts won the first seven places in the North East Section except third place and also they had six pigeons in the top ten in the Open National. This result is just one of many which shows the quality of the stock housed at Myrtle Lofts, 11x 1st Nationals in six years says it all. This is the first year I myself have raced Mark & Dick’s birds after purchasing 6 youngsters for the 2003 season, one was lost of the loft but the other five have all won prizes, this is not surprising after you study the quality of the stock and I do believe the best is yet to come.

It is a well known the reputation of Mark & Dick have for searching Europe for top quality pigeons and I am not surprised that major open winners are been reported to them on a regular basis. As a scribe for Racing Pigeon I have already visited a number of lofts which are winning out of turn with Mark & Dick Evans pigeons. I first introduced the Gaby Vandenabeele pigeons from them in 2002 and only racing four hens from the six I had purchased, so I can not claim I have had many years experience with them, but the four pigeons could not have been more encouraging.
